Reed Consulting has come to fruition as a result of over two decades of working and volunteering in the nonprofit field, both as a volunteer, donor, nonprofit Board Member, governmental and advisory Board Member, direct service provider, grantwriter and administrator. Having witnessed numerous examples of organizational effectiveness, efficiency, and sustainability (and, sadly, many more examples of ineffectiveness, inefficiency and unsustainability), I went on a soul searching mission to answer a number of key questions that kept arising again and again, both through my own personal experiences as well as those of my professional colleagues. These recurring questions included (but certainly weren’t limited to) the following:
“What is the secret to sustainable volunteer and in-kind support?”
“How do I know if my financial donation is having a real impact?”
“If I can only volunteer 5 hours a week to a charitable cause, how can I best maximize my efforts?”
“What constitutes effective Board governance?”
“What does ‘sustainability’ mean and look like in an organization?”
“What is mission drift and how can it be avoided?”
“How do I know that my organization is actually accomplishing its goals and fulfilling its mission?”
“How can my organization better communicate its mission and services to its constituents?”
“What does effective executive leadership look like?”
Luckily, the answer to these many questions came into clearer focus over time, each collaborative relationship providing a rare and precious opportunity for learning, perspective taking, capacity building and continuous quality improvement. These real life experiences, coupled with ongoing continuing education (including gaining certification as a nonprofit consultant, nonprofit executive, and development executive) has allowed Reed Consulting to refine and expand its own capacity to better serve organizations striving towards the important goal of self improvement.
